KEKOVA

KEKOVA ISLAND

Kekova is a popular stop off on the blue cruise route for gulet charter in Turkey.

The name refers to the region including the island of Kekova and the villages of Kalekoy and Ucagiz along with the three ancient towns of Simena, Teimussa and Tersane. Tersane means ‘shipyard’ and its bay was an ancient shipyard with ruins dating back to Byzantine times.

Along the coast of Kekova island, opposite the mainland, are the ruins of a half-submerged Lycian city, called Simena. It is now forbidden to swim around the ruins as in the past visitors took a piece of the ancient relics as a souvenir. However, it is still possible to swim around the ruins of an ancient Byzantine church at Tersane Bay. A Lycian necropolis can be seen at Teimussa, near the village of Ucagiz.

Since 1990 Kekova region has been included in the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forest’s specially protected areas and has become popular with visitors due to its stunning natural and cultural beauty.
